The journal publishes papers from all fields of geography and other sciences related to spatial analysis and environemt research (e.g. forestry, ecology, surveying, remote sensing, sociology, economy).

The main aim of the journal is to publish high quality research results from different research fields of geography and related sciences. Besides publishing original research papers part of the journal is dedicated to the development of quantitative and qualitative methods, use of geographic information systems, data collection and terminology in geography.

The journal is freely available at the web site and no registration is required.

Older issues are available here.

https://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8280Kronika // Chronicle2023-03-08T14:52:26+01:00Geografski vestnikgv@zrc-sazu.si2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8275100 let delovanja Zveze geografov Slovenije (1922–2022)2023-03-08T14:54:36+01:00Aleš Smrekarales.smrekar@zrc-sazu.siStanko Pelcstanko.pelc@pef.upr.siMimi Urbancmimi.urbanc@zrc-sazu.siJurij Kunaverjurij.kunaver@siol.net
Geografsko stanovsko organizacijo so vodili 2 predsednici in 16 predsednikov. //

One hundred years of the Association of Slovenian Geographers (1922–2022)

This article outlines the history of geography as professional organized activity in Slovenia. Its beginnings date back to 1922, when Slovenian geography students founded the student Geographical Society, which soon outgrew its student framework and became a society for all Slovenian geographers. During the hundred years of its existence, this organization was transformed several times in accordance with legislation; thus, in the 1980s, the Association of Slovenian Geographical Societies was formed, and in 2008 the Association of Slovenian Geographers, in which six societies are active. This professional organization has been led by eighteen presidents. Its activities include publishing the journals Geografski vestnik (Geographical Bulletin; ninety-four volumes since 1925) and Geografski obzornik (Geographic Review; sixty-ninth volumes since 1954), holding conferences (twenty-three since 1952), and many other events. These activities have accomplished its basic mission: developing geography research and education, and strengthening the profile of geography both in Slovenia and beyond.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8225Veliki gozdni požari v Sloveniji2023-03-08T14:55:00+01:00Blaž Komacblaz.komac@zrc-sazu.si
V poglavju o gozdnih požarih v Sloveniji v obdobju 1995–2019 predstavimo njihovo prostorsko, časovno in velikostno razporeditev in pojavljanje, ki ga pojasnimo z lastnim meteorološkim požarnim indeksom. //

Large forest fires in Slovenia

This article presents the basic characteristics of large wildfires, for which the term ‘forest fire’ has become common in Slovenian. The introduction discusses their frequency and geographical distribution, focusing on southern Europe and southern Slovenia, after which the characteristics of large fires, also called ‘megafires’, are explained. The section on forest fires in Slovenia presents their spatial, time and size characteristics for the period from 1995 to 2019 and explains their occurrence with the author’s own meteorological fire index. The hundred largest fires are treated separately, describing the characteristics that distinguish them from smaller fires. The last part provides an overview of the basic challenges in managing fire hazard and risk, highlighting areas where it would be useful to introduce or continue preventive measures.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8206Vpliv podnebnih sprememb na temperaturo vode v Sloveniji v 21. stoletju2023-03-08T14:55:12+01:00Peter Frantarpeter.frantar@gov.siAndrej Drakslerandrej.draksler@tcvode.si
Temperatura morja, površinskih in podzemnih voda v Sloveniji kaže v zadnjih desetletjih naraščajoč trend.

Climate change impacts on water temperature in Slovenia in the 21st century

Water temperature of the sea, surface and ground water has an increasing trend over the last decades in Slovenia. It is presumed that future climate changes will have an impact on water temperatures, therefore the impact by the end of the century was assessed with the use of air-water temperature correlation methodology. The correlation was assessed between homogenised air and water temperature datasets on comparable meteorological and hydrological stations. Regression models were then set up to estimate the water temperature based on climate scenarios data until the end of 21st century.

The analysis of water temperature by the end of 21st century was assessed for 57 stations on surface water, groundwater and at the sea. The results indicate the continuation of water temperature rise under all three climate change scenarios. The results of analysis show annual and seasonal change of water temperature for selected stations and the synthesis based on geographical characteristics.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8276Sporočilnost poštnih znamk v obdobju družbenopolitične tranzicije na območju nekdanje Jugoslavije – 2. del2023-03-08T14:54:24+01:00Anton Gosaranton.gosar@guest.arnes.si
Članek analizira in obravnava motive, valuto in pisavo na priložnostnih poštnih znamkah Zvezne republike Jugoslavije, Severne Makedonije, Bosne in Hercegovine, Kosova, Državne skupnosti Srbije in Črne Gore, Srbije ter Črne gore. V petletnem raziskovalnem obdobju pred in po prelomu politične/družbene in teritorialne strukture so njihove poštne uprave natisnile in izdale 1035 priložnostnih poštnih znamk. //

Expressions of postage stamps in times of political and social transition on the territory of former Yugoslavia – part 2

The article analyses and discusses the visuals, currency and writing on the postage stamps of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia and Montenegro. During the five-year research period, before and after the break in the political/social and territorial structure, we’ve found out that postal administrations in all these countries issued 1,035 postage stamps related to an occasion. In the journal Geografski vestnik, a similar analysis was conducted on stamps printed in socialist Yugoslavia (SFRJ) and sovereign nation-states of Slovenia and Croatia, now part of the European Union. The basic hypothesis of the research stems from the assumption that – parallel to socio-political changes – the messages on postage stamps are changing. The research confirmed the hypothesis, as more than 1/5 of stamps convey political content (237 postage stamps – 23%); these are complemented by messages closely related to the national culture, art and science (31%). On own postage stamps nation-states of South-Eastern Europe limit themselves with visuals, alphabets and currency to their cultural circle; but on rare occasions the desire to (again) (re)integrate into a multinational community, like the European Union, is smouldering. Based on the verification of the expression on postage stamps during the period of formation and/or disintegration of states in South-Eastern Europe, we conclude that the messages on postage stamps strengthen ethnic nationalism.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8277Od kakovosti tal do ekosistemskih storitev tal2023-03-08T14:54:12+01:00Marjetka Suhadolcmarjetka.suhadolc@bf.uni-lj.siAnton Govednikanton.govednik@bf.uni-lj.siRok Turniškirok.turniski@bf.uni-lj.siHelena Grčmanhelena.grcman@bf.uni-lj.si

From soil quality to soil ecosystem services

Soil quality is defined as the continued capacity of soils to provide ecosystem services (ES). Soil science identifies five main soil functions that provide ES: (i) primary production, (ii) water purification and regulation, (iii) carbon sequestration and climate regulation, (iv) biodiversity and habitat provision, and (v) provisioning and nutrient cycling. Three categories of ES assessments can be distinguished: (i) indicator approaches that use simplified approximations based on key soil properties as indicators, (ii) static approaches that apply empirical relationships to link soil properties to soil functions, and (iii) dynamic approaches that apply biophysical methods to integrate soil, climate, and environmental factors to model soil processes over time. Many decision-support tools have emerged, but the extent to which estimates of ES approximate the actual distribution and representation of each ES in space is questionable. High-quality soil input data, selection of robust soil quality indicators for ES assessment, and further development of models and tools for assessing soil functions and ES to reduce uncertainty are essential. Slovenia is in the process of establishing the concept of soil ES. Therefore, based on a literature review, this paper aims to show the development of concepts and approaches for ES assessment at the international level.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/GV94206Zapuščena naselja v gorskih območjih Furlanije - Julijske krajine: možnosti okrevanja Železne doline2023-03-14T12:23:50+01:00Igor Jelenigor.jelen@dispes.units.itErika Džajić Uršičerika.ursic@fuds.siMichael Beismannbeismann@regionalsynergie.comPeter Čedepeter.cede@uni-graz.atErnst Steinickeernst.steinicke@uibk.ac.at

Abandoned settlements in the mountainous areas of Friuli-Venezia Giulia: the possibilities of recovering of the Canal del Ferro

The aim of this work is to demonstrate that new immigrations improve the appearance and socioeconomic situation of remote alpine regions. Friuli mountain villages, having become sparsely inhabited or indeed real ghost towns, are particularly suitable areas for such studies. The research builds on the one hand on analysis of the current state of the art as well as on analyses of official statistical data. It is on the other hand derived from own surveys in the course of investigative visits to all ghost towns in the research area. The results show that newcomers bring innovation and new impulses in agriculture, tourism, artistic and cultural sphere and play a key role in renovating existing buildings, reusing fallow plots of land and establishing a creative dynamic. Their activities increasingly enable the regeneration and maintenance of alpine cultural landscapes, resulting in new social and agrarian structures, which are emerging as »new farming« in the study area. The village of Dordolla in the Aupa Valley has recently established itself as a centre of innovation of these new processes and its achievements are evident in the rest of the valley, too. The regeneration processes analysed in the study area could also be transferred to other remaining partially abandoned settlements in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and broader.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8263Notranjska v regionalizaciji Slovenije2023-03-08T14:54:48+01:00Janez Naredjanez.nared@zrc-sazu.si
It analyzes the area’s central settlements, workforce commuting, and sectoral divisions, as well as information from an online survey determining where respondents use services of regional importance and what their attitudes are about proposed regionalizations. The results indicate two groups of municipalities: municipalities east of the former Rapallo border that are oriented toward Ljubljana, and municipalities west of the former Rapallo border that are oriented toward Postojna and Koper. Respondents from the latter give priority to connections with the coastal municipalities, but they are opposed to strengthening connections with municipalities in central Slovenia, whereas respondents from the municipalities east of the former Rapallo border prioritize connections with other municipalities in Inner Carniola and the creation of Inner Carniola as a separate region. Based on professional criteria and the divided opinion of the respondents, the designation of Inner Carniola as a separate region does not make sense.
2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8281Zborovanja // Meetings2023-03-08T14:52:27+01:00Geografski vestnikgv@zrc-sazu.si2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8279Književnost // Literature2023-03-08T14:52:26+01:00Geografski vestnikgv@zrc-sazu.si2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnikhttps://ojs-gr.zrc-sazu.si/gv/article/view/8282Poročila // Reports2023-03-08T14:52:27+01:00Geografski vestnikgv@zrc-sazu.si2022-12-31T00:00:00+01:00Copyright (c) 2022 Geografski vestnik
