HIGH WATERS AND FLOODS IN 2019 AND 2020

Abstract

In 2019, the river stages were above average. The reason was repeated heavy rainfall, which exceeded the long-term average on an annual basis. According to the intensity and amount of precipitation that fell in the precipitation events, the rivers reached their highest flows in 2019 in February, May and November, when they also flooded in some places. In these months flows with higher return periods occurred mainly in the western and southern part of the country, where the orange warning values were exceeded. There was also coastal flooding in February and November. In 2020, the rivers exceeded the orange warning values in December, mainly the karst rivers, and the sea flooded the lower parts of the coast. However, there were no record high waters in any of these events in 2019 and 2020.
