Abstract

The elderly are at risk of acute illnesses or the deterioration of chronic diseases or injuries. Analyses of the response to certain disasters show that their preparedness to natural disasters is also weaker than in other segments of the population. To help the elderly deal with their health problems, they are, among other things, provided with first aid training that is adapted to this growing population. The authors of numerous studies have assessed that they have a much poorer knowledge of first aid than the younger generations, either because they have never attended such training or because several years have passed since their last training. Nonetheless, they are equally capable of carrying out first aid procedures. During natural and other disasters, first aid knowledge is considered to be a part of the basic knowledge that should be mastered by everyone. In this paper, we discuss and give reasons in support of a systematic approach to first aid training for the elderly in Slovenia.
