Abstract

In 2024 the upward temperature trend in Slovenia continued, and with the average temperature 1.8°C above the norm for 1991–2020 it was by far the highest on record. Everywhere was at least 1°C warmer than normal, with a few measuring points even exceeding 2°C. 2024 was quite different from previous years, with 2019 being the most similar, being less warm and slightly less wet. Precipitation exceeded the norm by one tenth, with the highest rainfall in the Julian Alps, where it exceeded 4000 mm locally. The vast majority of the country had more rainfall than normal, with only a few areas having up to one tenth less rainfall than normal. The highest above-normal precipitation was in the mountains in the north of the country and parts of the Julian Alps. Sunny weather was 2% above the norm. The anomaly of insolation was within ±5% in most of the country. At Kredarica, the snow cover reached 385 cm on 2 April, then quickly melted in May and June; by 25 June the ground was already dry. Permanent snow cover began on 20 November. In the absence of precipitation, the snow cover was noticeably below normal for the last two months of the year.
