Abstract

In 2021 there were 45 earthquakes across the world that either reached or exceeded a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.5. Three had a moment magnitude greater than or equal to 8.0, and sixteen between 7.0 and 7.9. At least 24 earthquakes claimed human lives; in total there were at least 2471 victims. The 29 July 2021 earthquake near Alaska ranked highest in terms of released energy, with a moment magnitude of 8.2. The most devastating earthquake, with at least 2248 victims, occurred on 14 August on Haiti, with a moment magnitude of 7.2. The strongest earthquake in Europe, with a moment magnitude of 6.4, struck the Greek island of Crete on 12 October 2021.
