Abstract

In 2020, earthquake activity in Slovenia was slightly below the long-term average. The Seismic Network of the Republic of Slovenia recorded 2210 local earthquakes. People felt at least 156 local earthquakes, 31 earthquakes with their epicentres in Croatia and one earthquake with its epicentre in Hungary. There were 48 earthquakes with a local magnitude equal to or higher than 2.0. The strongest earthquake with an epicentre in Slovenia in 2020, with a local magnitude of 3.9, happened on 17 July at 02:50 UTC near Čezsoča. Its maximum intensity was IV-V EMS-98. The first earthquake in 2020, which caused quite some fear and minor damage to buildings across Slovenia, occurred on March 22 near Zagreb in Croatia, with a magnitude of 5.3 and an intensity of V EMS-98. Two earthquakes with epicentres near Petrinja in Croatia reached the maximum intensity in Slovenia: V-VI EMS-98. The strongest of the two of them, with magnitude 6.4, also caused some damage to buildings in Slovenia.
