FLOODS AROUND THE WORLD IN 2018
Abstract
In 2018, 325 major floods occurred around the world, claiming a total of 5495 casualties (compared to 5114 in 2017). Most floods were recorded in South and South-East Asia, with the majority occurring in India, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Myanmar. The highest number of individual floods, 39 to be exact, was recorded in the USA. In 2018, floods triggered the migration of nearly 5.8 million people, who were forced to leave their homes due to the high water (which, according to the Dartmouth Flood Observatory, was a million fewer people than in 2017), and affected 13.6 million square kilometres of land (according to the DFO). Floods of the highest magnitude, 7.5, occurred in Sudan in August.
