Abstract

Climate change is already impacting our world by putting nature, wildlife, people and their homes at risk. Globally, ground air temperature has risen by approximately 1°C since the 1950s, with an uncertainty of 0.2°C, and the trend of the last 30 years has been approximately 0.2°C per decade. This means that in only 25 years there could be an increase in global temperature of 1.5°C compared to the values during the preindustrial era (1850-1900). The effects of this will be severe. Based on requests by governments, the IPCC has issued a report assessing how the impacts of a 1.5˚C temperature limit differ from a 2˚C limit, and the differences between the emission pathways for achieving these two temperature goals. This article presents the differences between the two scenarios, globally as well as regionally. In both cases, drastic action is necessary to reduce the current rate of temperature increase.
