ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEODESY AND GEOPHYSICS (IUGG)
Abstract
The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) is dedicated to advancing, promoting and coordinating scientific research of the Earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and magnetosphere. Considering this, it is at its core connected to the investigation of different natural disasters such as meteorological and hydrological disasters, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, and related phenomena. The main goals are the understanding of the causes of natural disasters and the efforts to mitigate their consequences, and sustainable development. The IUGG consists of eight semi-autonomous associations, but the coordination of interdisciplinary research is especially important. The IUGG was established in 1919 in Brussels. Its centennial was celebrated by the 27th General Assembly in Montreal and with a special event at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Slovenia is one of 59 full member countries through the Slovenian Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, which has already been successfully working for 26 years.
