GLOBAL CLIMATE CONDITIONS IN 2017

Abstract

The global mean temperature in 2017 was approximately 1.1°C above the pre-industrial era, more than halfway towards the maximum limit of temperature increase of 2°C sought through the Paris Agreement, which further strives to limit the increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. 2017 was the warmest on record without an El Niño event, and one of the three warmest years behind the record-setting 2016. The world’s nine warmest years have all occurred since 2005, and the five warmest since 2010. Extreme weather claimed lives and destroyed livelihoods in many countries. 2017 was the most expensive year on record for severe weather and climate events.
