Abstract

Earthquake activity in Slovenia in 2017 was lower than average. The Seismic Network of the Republic of Slovenia recorded 2105 local earthquakes, at least 90 of which were felt by the local people. There were 19 earthquakes with a local magnitude equal to or higher than 2.0, but there were only three which reached maximum intensity IV-V EMS-98. The strongest earthquake in Slovenia in 2017, with a local magnitude of 2.9, was observed on 6 July at 16:58 UTC (18:58 Central European Summer Time (CEST)) near Litija. Its maximum intensity was IV-V EMS-98. A few people were frightened and ran outdoors. In exceptional cases on higher floors some reported that small, unstable objects fell or shifted. Some of the inhabitants of Slovenia also felt four regional earthquakes with epicentres in Central Italy. Their maximum intensity was III-IV EMS-98. An earthquake near Belluno (Northern Italy) and near Krk island (Croatia) were also felt in Slovenia. There were no earthquakes in Slovenia in 2017 that caused damage to buildings.
