GLOBAL CLIMATE CONDITIONS IN 2016
Abstract
The year 2016 was the warmest since global temperature data collection began, and the temperature anomaly was 1.1 °C above the pre-industrial period. Globally averaged sea surface temperatures were also the warmest on record, and the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was a record high. The powerful 2015/16 El Niño played an important role in climate and weather patterns. The year was marked by severe droughts, heavy precipitation and floods in many parts of the world. Hurricane Matthew caused significant damage in Haiti and part of the USA.
