Abstract

The number of high water events in 2016 and their time distribution coincided with the average of the recent years, which indicated the increase of high waters in January and February. The warming periods, accompanied by rain in combination with the frozen and consequently impermeable soil, contribute to extremely unfavourable hydrological conditions as it, as a rule, lead to the over spilling of rivers and at the same time reduce the stock of water in snow, which is needed in the spring time. In 2016, the sequence of such events caused a long-lasting inundation of the Karst rivers. Together with numerous heavy rain showers and the spilling of torrential water courses in the late spring and summer time and the November floods, high water conditions were recorded on as much as 57 days for at least one river or common torrential area in 2016, which on an average means one day per week.
