Abstract

On 5 July 2016, soon after 9 o’clock in the morning, the inhabitants of the Dolenjska and Posavje regions were surprised by loud thunder and shaking. The first impression was that an earthquake had hit the region, but seismologists at the Slovenian Environment Agency soon realized that there had been a sonic boom caused by two aircraft over the region. Four stations of the Seismic Network of the Republic of Slovenia recorded the incident. The sonic boom of two military aircraft was later confirmed by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia. Based on the seismograms and more than 20 witness reports, who either phoned us or sent a macro-seismic questionnaire, we are able to reconstruct the approximate path of the aircraft’s supersonic flight.
