Abstract

In 2015, 191 major floods occurred around the world, which is more than in the previous year (179) and in the years before that; however, they claimed fewer casualties in 2015 compared to previous years. Most floods were recorded in Southeast Asia, with the majority occurring in India, the Philippines and Pakistan. In 2015, floods triggered the migration of at least 5.5 million people, who were forced to leave their homes due to the high waters (which, according to Dartmouth Flood Observatory, was a lower number of people than the year before). The floods resulted in 4293 casualties, and affected 18.2 million square kilometres of land (DFO estimate).
