Abstract

There were 95 tropical storms in 2015, which is above the annual average. A below-average number of tropical storms developed over the Atlantic and the North and South Indian Oceans, and a fairly average number of tropical storms formed over the West Pacific Ocean, but the average was exceeded in the East and South Pacific. The strongest tropical cyclones in 2015 were Hurricane Patricia, Typhoon Soudelor and Cyclone Pam. Most damaging were Typhoons Koppu and Melor in the Philippines, and Cyclone Pam, which devastated the archipelago of Vanuatu. More than 881 people died globally due to tropical cyclones. Tornadoes claimed 109 lives worldwide. For the first time since 2011, the number of tornadoes in the USA was slightly above average.
