MIGRATION FLOW IN SLOVENIA – THE ROLE OF PROTECTION AND RESCUE SYSTEM
Abstract
In the period from the autumn of 2015 to the spring of 2016, the territory of the Republic of Slovenia was part of the Balkan route of mass migrations. More than 480,000 refugees and migrants crossed Slovenia at that time. During these large movements of people, different national authorities and nongovernmental organizations involved were confronted with a serious challenge of providing safety and humanitarian assistance The RS Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief and the Civil Protection national bodies which were responsible for the reception and support of the refugees and migrants, engaged in their work the whole of the protection and rescue system, which is based on nongovernmental volunteer organizations and support of other humanitarian organizations operating outside the system. Although the plans of the protection and rescue system and the Civil Protection do not provide for this type of activity, the relevant solutions dealing with the accommodation and support of the population at risk during natural and other disasters could nevertheless be applied appropriately.
