PUBLIC OPINION ON PROTECTION AGAINST DISASTERS

Abstract

This article presents the basic standpoints and opinions of the European and Slovenian public on civil protection and protection against disasters. Descriptive data analysis has shown that the European public is more concerned about potential man-made disasters than natural disasters. Terrorism and, to a lesser degree, armed conflict are also matters of concern. The Slovenian public is slightly more concerned about natural disasters than man-made disasters. The sense of being under threat from terrorism and armed conflict has increased significantly over the past few years. The trust that the authorities will issue a timely hazard warning and keep the public fully informed in the case of a natural or other disaster is relatively high, and the same applies to the trust placed in mass media reports on disasters.
