Abstract

Italian easternmost province Friuli was hit by a strong earthquake sequence in 1976. Almost 1000 people died and the damage was extensive. The strongest earthquake had magnitude 6.5, and 7 aftershocks reached magnitudes larger than 5.0. The aftershock activity following the earthquake on 6 May 1976 seemed ordinary, but on 11 and 15 September there were four very strong aftershocks that added to the destruction. Even the already repaired houses were seriously damaged again. In Slovenia, Posočje was the most severely hit part, and damage was greatest in the area of Breginjski kot. One person in Sedlo died due to the 6 May earthquake, and 31 persons were injured.
