CLIMATE CONDITIONS AROUND THE GLOBE IN 2014

Abstract

In 2014, average near-surface temperature was among the highest worldwide up to date, whereas the upper ocean layer temperature reached record values. Precipitation over land did not exceed the average annual value. For the most part of 2014, the USA experienced a considerable contrast between the warm west and the cold east of the country. The central part of South America faced extremely warm weather several times through the year, while in mid 2014 the temperatures in the north of Europe and parts of Asia kept on reaching record values. At the beginning and the end of the year, the eastern part of the USA was hit by severe cold. In May, the central part of the Balkans was struck by devastating flooding; in September floods hit India and Pakistan, in the autumn Italy and France frequently experienced downpour. China, Brazil and California were affected by severe drought. The Antarctic sea ice extent remained unusually large most of the year.
