METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS DURING THE ICE STORM CAUSING GLAZE ICE AT THE END OF JANUARY AND THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY 2014

Abstract

At the end of January and the beginning of February 2014 a considerable part of Slovenia was hit by ice storms that caused glaze ice formation. Over the period of several consecutive days Slovenia experienced a distinct temperature inversion with cold near-surface air mass and a layer of relatively warm air at higher altitudes. Due to heavy rains and the temperature below freezing, layers of thick glaze ice were formed in many places. The glaze ice started melting only with the warming that occured on 5 and 6 February. Slovenia faced constant temperature and precipitation changes both in terms of time and space. Therefore, extensive data are included in our comprehensive meteorological analysis.
