WORLD'S STRONGEST EARTHQUAKES IN 2014

Abstract

There were 55 earthquakes in the world in year 2014 that either reached or exceeded a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.5. One earthquake had a moment magnitude greater than or equal to 8.0 and 11 of them were between 7.0 and 7.9. There were 15 earthquakes that claimed human lives; in total there were at least 658 victims. The most devastating earthquake in 2014 happened on 3 August in Yunnan province, China, where 617 people were killed. The 1 April earthquake offshore Chile ranked first in terms of the energy released, with a moment magnitude of 8.2. The deepest earthquake happened on 21 July near Fiji with a hypocentre 616 km below the surface and the moment magnitude of 6.9. The strongest earthquake in Europe with a moment magnitude of 6.9 happened on 24 May in the Aegean Sea.
