CATASTROPHIC WINDS WORLDWIDE IN 2014
Abstract
There were 83 tropical storms in 2014, which is below annual average. The Atlantic, West Pacific and North Indian Oceans saw a below-average number of tropical storms while the average was exceeded in the East Pacific basin and the southern hemisphere. The strongest tropical cyclone in 2014 was Typhoon Vongfong in October. Most damaging, however, were the Typhoon Rammasun that battered the Philippines, China and Vietnam in July, and Cyclone Hudhud making landfall in India in October. More than 812 people around the world died due to tropical cyclones. Tornadoes alone claimed 51 lives worldwide. The USA was hit by the smallest number of tornadoes since 1988.
