MAJOR NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2013 AND 2014 RANKED BY DAMAGE AND FATALITIES

Abstract

The article presents damage and fatalities caused by natural disasters worldwide in 2013 and 2014. Globally, both the damage and the number of fatalities were lower than the long-term average. In 2013, most of the damage was caused by flooding in Central Europe, while typhoon Haiyan caused the largest number of fatalities. The Philippines was the most affected by the typhoon. In 2014, most of the damage was caused by tropical cyclone Hudhud that hit India, while floods in India and Pakistan caused the largest number of fatalities. The last part of the article briefly presents selected natural disasters in the period discussed using publicly available satellite imagery.
