Abstract

During the floods, which occurred in autumn 2014, some of the citizens of the Republic of Slovenia wondered whether the floods that occurred relatively frequently in the last decade are really the floods with a 100-year return period? In order to find an answer to this question we analysed discharge data from three torrential gauging stations in Slovenia, taking into account the conditions in 2014. The results indicate that the hydrological situation in year 2014 was above average, which is consistent with extreme meteorological conditions. Consideration of year 2014 in the flood frequency analysis can, in some cases, lead to significant changes in the estimated design discharge values (normally a 100-year discharge).
