THE IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRATING WATER RESCUE EXERCISES IN FIRST AID TRAINING
Abstract
Good swimmers should master the basics of water rescue and the specifics of providing first aid to a drowning person. This knowledge is especially important for medical professionals, first aid providers and those who should possess such skills due to the nature of their job. The survey was conducted among the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana. The objective of the study was to determine the students’ knowledge of first aid provision to drowning persons and the positive impact of water rescue exercises on their knowledge as part of first aid training programmes. An anonymous questionnaire was used to collect survey data. A total of 506 students completed the questionnaire. It was established that the students whose training included water rescue exercises and the related first aid measures had better knowledge than those who have not (yet) attended specific training courses. The results of the survey corroborate the findings of other authors, which indicate the necessity to integrate water rescue exercises in first aid training programmes for medical professionals, members of first aid teams, the first responders and members of other target groups who are likely to need these skills.
