WORLD'S LARGEST EARTHQUAKES IN 2013
Abstract
There were 61 earthquakes in the world in 2013 that either reached or exceeded a moment magnitude (Mw) of 6.5, caused major damage to buildings and other structures, or claimed human lives. Two earthquakes had a moment magnitude greater than 8.0, and 17 between 7.0 and 7.9. There were 13 earthquakes that claimed human lives; in total, there were at least 1511 victims. The most devastating earthquake in 2013 happened on 24th September in southeastern Pakistan where 825 people were killed. The 24 May earthquake in the Sea of Okhotsk ranked first in terms of released energy, with a moment magnitude of 8.3. The deepest earthquake happened few hours later in the same epicentral area (the Sea of Okhotsk) with a hypocentre 623 km below the surface and a moment magnitude of 6.7. The strongest earthquake in Europe with a moment magnitude of 6.6 happened on 12th October near Crete, Greece.
