Abstract

The number of tropical storms in 2013 was above average. Over the Atlantic Ocean, the season of tropical cyclones was calm and of low intensity. Only two hurricanes developed. Over the West Pacific, the number of tropical storms was above average, with 16 typhoons, including one of the strongest ever. Typhoon Haiyan caused catastrophic damage in November on the Philippines, in which 6,300 people died. More than 7,740 people died globally due to tropical cyclones. Tornadoes claimed 113 victims. In the USA, the number of tornadoes was below average.
