EFFECTIVENESS OF A SPACE BLANKET AS THERMAL PROTECTION OF CASUALTIES
Abstract
First aid providers often have to face weather challenges. For the protection of injured people against severe weather conditions, first aid kits also include a space blanket. The purpose of this study was to analyze a thermal response of the space blanket to temperature changes in the environment. Based on empirical measurements of air temperatures under the gold and silver sides, the study evaluates the effectiveness of the metalized film in providing protection against thermal impacts from the environment. It has been found out that the film, upon an appropriate choice of the sheet’s side, can especially reduce thermal stress and to some extent, also the cooling of the body.
