Abstract

The satellite technology has significantly progressed in recent years. Satellite data is being increasingly included in the process of monitoring state of the atmosphere, land surface, and oceans, including air pollution and climate change. Monitoring the state of vegetation plays a more and more important role for the monitoring of land surface, especially in the summer, since different changes such as the yellowing of leaves caused by drought can be detected also by satellite measurements. The article presents satellite products developed by the member states of the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). The Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) has operational access to these products. They include different vegetation indices which show the state of vegetation at the regional level. The spatial resolution of these vegetation indices is a few kilometres, and if vegetation in the pixel area is not homogeneous, the indices show the average vegetation condition in it. The article illustrates examples of Fraction of Vegetation Cover (FVC) for 2013, which shows areas of possible drought.
