HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2012
Abstract
The year 2012 was an extremely dry year. Yet, at the end of the year, large-scale floods developed. Both hydrologic extremes caused immense material damage and, consequently, Slovenia had to request international assistance from the European Union. The hydrological drought of 2011 extended into 2012. As a result, there was a lack of potable water in the summer months in the eastern and southern part of Slovenia, in particular in Slovenian Istria. In November, severe floods emerged in the area of the Vipava Valley and the Drava River Region. The Drava River and some of its tributaries have reached extreme values of water discharges.
