SEVERE PRECIPITATION BETWEEN 26 OCTOBER AND 5 NOVEMBER 2012
Abstract
At the end of October and the beginning of November 2012, Slovenia was hit by catastrophic floods. A series of Mediterranean cyclones, accompanied by weather fronts and a strong SW wind in high altitudes, resulted in extremely extensive rainfall. At the time of the first floods, most precipitation developed in the Gorizia region. This was followed by less developed precipitation and then, later, by heavier precipitation. During the latter, rainfall focused on the mountains north and west to Slovenia. Eleven-day precipitation exceeded 400 mm. The measured rainfall intensities in various periods reached or occasionally even exceeded the 100-year return period.
