THE 3 DECEMBER 2012 EARTHQUAKE IN THE ZGORNJI TUHINJ REGION
Abstract
The strongest earthquake in Slovenia in 2012 took place on 3 December 2012 at 04.36 UTC (05.36 Central European Summer Time / CEST) near the village of Zgornji Tuhinj, beneath the hill of Menina planina. It had a local magnitude of 3.8. The highest intensity V (EMS-98) was reported from Gornji Grad, Bočna, Florjan, Lenart pri Gornjem Gradu, Ljubno pri Savinji, Litija, Rafolče, Velika Lašna and Kamnik. In the epicentral area, the earthquake caused minor non-structural damage to individual buildings. Records of Slovenian Seismic Network report of seven aftershocks, located in the same area in December. According to data acquired from portable seismic station, temporarily set soon after the main earthquake in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter in Zgornji Tuhinj, the hypocentres lied at the depth of approximately 14 km.
