CATASTROPHIC WINDS AROUND THE WORLD IN 2012
Abstract
The season of tropical cyclones over the Atlantic Ocean was above average. Ten hurricanes developed, among which Hurricane Sandy was the most destructive tropical cyclone. Over the East Pacific Ocean, an average number of tropical storms developed, including ten hurricanes. Furthermore, there was an average number of tropical storms over the West Pacific Ocean with 16 typhoons. The number of tropical storms over the South Pacific was below average. The Philippines were hit by the most devastating tropical storms, in particular Typhoon Bopha. More than 2300 persons died globally due to tropical cyclones. Tornadoes claimed 111 casualties around the world. Nevertheless, the tropical storm season in the USA was unusually calm.
