MAJOR NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012 RANKED BY DAMAGE AND VICTIMS

Abstract

This article presents the damage caused by natural disasters worldwide in 2012. Most of the damage was caused by Hurricane Sandy on the coast of North America, while the typhoon in the Philippines, low temperatures in Eastern Europe, and floods in Pakistan and Nigeria caused the largest number of victims. In 2012, the most people were affected by the Sahel drought, by the China floods and by the typhoon in the Philippines and China. The last part of the article briefly shows the effects of major natural disasters on landscape in 2012, in terms of the number of victims and the damage they caused, using publicly available satellite imagery. It focuses in particular on storms, floods and droughts.
