EARTHQUAKES IN THE TUHINJ VALLEY IN 1840
Abstract
The earthquake that occurred in the vicinity of Gornji Grad on 3 December 2012 was one of the strongest in the last years in Slovenia. It is less known that a strong earthquake hit the same area also in 1840. The main shock occurred on 27 August 1840 and reached the maximum intensity VII EMS-98 in Ljubljana and Eisenkappel, Austria. It was felt as far away as Venice, Italy, 200 km away. The macroseismic magnitude of the main shock, estimated from the area of intensity VI EMS-98, was 5.0. The paper describes the effects of the main shock and its aftershocks.
