Abstract

European Seismological Commission is the most important international organisation to promote research, scientific cooperation and education in the field of seismology in Europe. It was founded in 1952 in Stuttgart. The work of the commission is organised in several working groups. Among the results of its activities is also the founding of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the publication of the first harmonised map of seismic hazard for Europe. The ESC organises biennal scientific meetings which are the most important seismological forum in Europe.
