HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2011
Abstract
After extensive flooding in Slovenia in the last few years, there were, fortunately, no major floods in 2011. To a lesser extent, rivers flooded the usual areas of annual floods. The year 2011 was, hydrologically, an extremely dry year. In normally abundant spring and autumn months, river discharges were extremely low or practically non-existent. Thus, water levels in April, September and November were about 60 per cent lower than usual. In 2011, river discharges were about 38 per cent lower than average discharges in the 30-year comparative period. The water deficit continued until the end of 2011 and, due to poor snow cover, also extended into 2012.
