SPRING DROUGHT AND OTHER WEATHER IMPACTS ON AGRICULTURAL PLANTS IN 2011
Abstract
Three drought intervals – spring, and early and late summer – hindered agricultural production in Slovenia in 2011. Due to a very warm and dry spring, the vegetation period started 14 days earlier than usual, which hindered spring growth of agricultural plants. On 18 August, after the wet period in late July, agricultural plants underwent heat stress. Furthermore, high levels of solar radiation provoked sunburns. Drought and heat triggered up to 14 days earlier ripening of agricultural crops, fruit trees and vines. The September heat and drought aggravated the autumn sowing of agricultural plants. Agricultural yield was periodically damaged by hail storms. The worst damage was recorded on 11 and 14 July.
