Abstract

Oil spills in the sea can have several negative effects on the environment and the economy. They require immediate response by the competent authorities which can, in case of a spill, also apply mathematical models simulating the processes of oil spreading and degradation. The article provides an overview of processes and models of oil slick spreading in marine environment. It describes the NAFTA3d model and its application, and explains the input data and results of the model in two potential spill locations in the Gulf of Trieste taking into account the actual (non-stationary) weather and hydrodynamic conditions. The description also includes simulations based on tactical and forecasting methods. By means of the process integration and coupling of different circulation models, the NAFTA3d model can also be used as a supplementary tool by the services which are responsible for spill containment and mitigation of consequences during oil spills in the sea.
