Abstract

The five hundredth anniversary of the large earthquake that hit western Slovenia and the Friuli region on 26 March 1511 was marked by an expert consultation titled “Natural disasters in Slovenia”, which took place in Ig and Idrija, by a thematic exhibition “Anno Domini 1511” and by the rescue exercise “Earthquake Idrija 2011”. Historical records of the effects of this earthquake are rather sparse. The anniversary therefore triggered new historical and seismological investigations that will help determine the earthquake’s epicentre and its magnitude. At the same time, geological surveys of the Idrija fault are being conducted.
