COMPARISON OF FLOODS IN SEPTEMBER 2010 WITH REGISTERED HISTORIC FLOOD EVENTS

Abstract

Strong and extensive precipitation that covered Slovenia between the 17^th and the 19^th of September led to the overflow of watercourses and flooding across Slovenia. The flooding was exceptional due to its size. Extensive floods occurred in the Ljubljana Moor, in the Vipava valley, on the Krka River basin, the lower course of the Sava River, and karst fields of the Notranjska and Dolenjska karst region. The event ranks as the most extreme flood recorded. In the mentioned areas, there were discharges equal to a 100-year return period. The largest floods in the Savinja River basin and in the middle stream of the Sava are still the floods from November 1990. An increasing trend of high water level events has been seen in Slovenia. These events include those in which discharges of Slovenian rivers exceed flood warning levels.
