Abstract

There were 83 earthquakes in the world in the year 2010 that either reached a magnitude of 6.5 or more, caused major damage to buildings and other structures, or even claimed human lives. One such earthquake had a moment magnitude (Mw) greater than 8.0 and twentyone earthquakes had a moment magnitude between 7.0 and 7.9. In 2010 more than 19 earthquakes claimed human lives, all together over 226,729 lives. The most devastating earthquake in 2010 occurred on 12 January in Haiti, where more than 222,000 people were killed. The most energy released during an earthquake was on 27 February in Chile. This earthquake with a moment magnitude of 8.8 claimed 577 human lives. The deepest earthquake occurred on 23 July in the Moro Gulf in the Philippines, with a hypocentre 641 km below the surface and moment magnitude of 7.4.
