CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN THE WORLD IN 2010
Abstract
The season of tropical cyclones above the Atlantic Ocean was exceptional by the number of tropical storms and their intensity. Twelve hurricanes were formed. A below-average number of tropical storms was formed above the Eastern and Western Pacific Ocean – the season was extremely calm. There hurricanes developed above the Eastern Pacific Ocean and eight typhoons developed above the Western Pacific Ocean. The Fanapi typhoon that affected Taiwan and China was especially devastating. The number of tropical storms in the Indian Ocean was average or slightly below average. Over 1,300 people in the world died due to the effects of tropical cyclones. The tornados across the world claimed 50 lives out of which 45 were in the USA.
