Abstract

Based on calculations of leading institutions for climate monitoring, 2009 was one of the warmest years recorded in the past 100 years. High annual temperatures can be partly attributed to the El Ni o phenomenon that intensified in the second half of the year. Heat waves affected Australia several times, while parts of Europe and the USA experienced very low temperatures at the beginning and end of the year. Texas, Mexico and China suffered severe drought conditions. The arctic oscillation index plummeted to extremely low values in December.
