Abstract

In December 2009, Slovenia was hit by floods. Heavy precipitation, mostly occurring in the western part of the country, significantly increased river discharges. The Soča was one of the most affected rivers, reaching its highest level in 65 years at the gauging station in Solkan. This paper presents the reasons for the higher water levels of the Soča River, and describes the conditions during the flash flood in some places near Soča, as well as the role of the river accumulation manager at the Soča Hydroelectric power plants in Nova Gorica.
