CATASTROPHIC WINDS IN THE WORLD DURING 2009
Abstract
The tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic Ocean was below average in terms of the number of tropical cyclones and their intensity. Only three hurricane hits occurred. An above-average number of tropical storms developed in the East Pacific Ocean, whereas the number of tropical storms in the West Pacific Ocean was below average. With regard to the accumulated cyclone energy, the East Pacific season was average and the West Pacific season was below average. Thirteen typhoons developed above the West Pacific. Those affecting the Philippines were most destructive, since the islands were hit by five tropical storms. In the Indian Ocean, the number of tropical storms was above average. At least 2,600 people died all over the world as a result of the consequences of tropical cyclones. Tornadoes claimed 44 casualties with 21 of these being recorded in the USA (less than in the previous season).
