ANALYSIS OF DESTRUCTIVE AVALANCHES IN THE DOLIČ MOUNTAIN HUT AREA IN SPRING 2009 AND THE ENSUING PREVENTIVE GUIDELINES
Abstract
Abundant snowfall in the mountains in the winter season of 2008/09 resulted in an increased number of avalanches. Avalanches caused the greatest damage in the Dolič Saddle area where they destroyed part of the mountain hut – closed in winter time – and the nearby winter shelter. An analysis of the snow and avalanche conditions leading to this event and its reconstruction are presented in this article. Expert findings and proposed guidelines for follow-up measures in case of avalanche threats are described at the end of the article.
