CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA
Abstract
In light of the growing significance of infrastructure systems for human existence, research into security has intensely dealt with protection of critical social infrastructure. Chemical industry as specific activity that is based on the processing of substances with special properties can seriously harm people, their health and environment, and is hence classified among critical infrastructure sectors. The purpose of this article is to highlight the critical aspects of chemical industry, key threats and risks affecting this industry, and its geographical distribution, social importance and co-dependence with other sectors of critical infrastructure. Based on general findings and experiences of other countries particular attention is dedicated to the analysis of a potentially critical infrastructure in the Republic of Slovenia, which is largely based on the results obtained through a structured interview with experts on production, storage and processing of chemical substances.
