HIGH WATERS IN SLOVENIA IN 2008
Abstract
After thunderstorms in 2007, during which Slovenia experienced catastrophic floods, high waters were common in 2008. Spring and autumn high waters were present when rivers flooded, mostly in the areas where floods are noticed every year. During the summer the torrents caused floods, and during the autumn the sea flooded the lower ends of the coast. During 2008, the highest river flows did not exceed the 10-year return period, while during the high tide on December 1st the sea level reached its secondhighest measured level in the monitored period for the last fifty years. The sea also flooded parts of coastal towns and salt pans in areas where floods are usually not frequent.
